When it can’t, the shingles and the wood underneath them start to break down from the underside out. What roof and attic ventilation actually is

Roof ventilation is the continuous exchange of air through your attic: cooler outside air comes in low, warm and moist air escapes high. That’s it. Two jobs, two locations. Intake pulls fresh air in near the eaves, and exhaust lets the hot, humid air push out near the peak. When both are working and balanced, air moves through the attic on its own, no fan required, driven by heat rising and the pressure difference between low and high vents.

How roof ventilation works: intake and exhaust balance

The whole thing lives or dies on balance. Attic intake and exhaust balance means the vent area pulling air in should roughly match the vent area pushing air out. Get it lopsided, and the system fights itself. Too much exhaust with not enough intake, and the roof starts pulling conditioned air out of your living space or drawing in moisture through gaps. Too much intake with weak exhaust, and the hot air just sits up there with nowhere to go.

The general target roofers use is a 1:1 ratio, roughly half your net free vent area for intake down low, half for exhaust up high. During every free inspection we do, we include an attic ventilation and intake check, because you can’t judge a roof’s health from the shingles alone. A lot of the problems we find are hiding in the airflow.

Types of roof vents and what each one does

Not every vent belongs on every house. Here’s how the common ones break down.

Ridge vents

These run along the peak of the roof, hidden under a cap of shingles, and they’re the workhorse for exhaust. Because they span the entire ridge, they release hot air evenly across the whole attic instead of one hot spot. Paired with continuous soffit intake, a ridge vent is the cleanest, most balanced setup we install on most Cincinnati shingle roofs.

Soffit vents

Soffit vents sit in the underside of your eaves and do the intake job, feeding cool air in at the low edge of the attic. They’re the half of the system people forget about. We’ve walked into plenty of attics where the exhaust looked fine but the soffits were painted shut or stuffed with insulation, which chokes the whole flow. If your soffits need attention, that’s its own repair, and we handle soffit repair as part of keeping the intake side breathing.

Gable vents

Found on the end walls of the attic, gable vents move air side to side rather than bottom to top. They can work on simpler roof shapes, but they don’t play well with ridge-and-soffit setups because they can short-circuit the airflow. We’ll use them where the roof geometry calls for it, not as a default.

Roof, turbine, and box vents

Box vents (also called static or louvered vents) are the low-profile squares you see dotted near the ridge. Turbine vents are the spinning caps that pull air out with wind power. Both are static exhaust options that work when a continuous ridge vent isn’t practical for the roof design.

Powered attic fans

These are electric or solar fans that force exhaust. They can help in specific cases, but they need enough intake to feed them, otherwise they’ll pull air from inside your house and drive up your cooling bill. We’d rather size a passive system correctly than bolt on a fan to fix a balance problem.

Signs of poor roof ventilation

Most homeowners don’t call us about ventilation. They call about a symptom and don’t realize it traces back to airflow. Here are the signs of poor roof ventilation we see most in the field:

  • An upstairs that never cools down. If your second floor is always hotter than the rest of the house, trapped attic heat is radiating down into it.
  • Mold or musty smells in the attic. Warm moist air with no exit condenses on the underside of the sheathing. That’s how you get dark staining, and eventually rot, on wood that should stay dry.
  • Ice dams in winter. Heat escaping into a poorly-vented attic melts snow, which refreezes at the cold eaves and backs water up under the shingles.
  • Higher energy bills. Your AC is fighting a superheated attic all summer.
  • Shingles aging early. Curling, blistering, or premature granule loss from heat baking them from below.

Ventilation and shingle lifespan (and why it’s tied to our warranty)

This is the part that matters for your wallet. Ventilation and shingle lifespan are directly linked. Owens Corning, like every shingle manufacturer, writes its product warranty around a properly ventilated attic. Bake those shingles from the underside with trapped heat and moisture, and they fail years ahead of schedule, sometimes voiding the manufacturer coverage you paid for.

How to figure out the right ventilation for your home

The building-code rule of thumb is 1 square foot of net free vent area for every 150 square feet of attic floor. If you have a proper balanced intake-and-exhaust system, that can drop to 1 to 300. Then you split that total roughly in half between intake down low and exhaust up high.

The catch is “net free area” isn’t the physical size of the vent, it’s the open airflow area after the screening and louvers cut it down. Every house is a little different, and the shape of your roof (how cut-up it is, the pitch, where the penetrations sit) changes the answer.
